A rare Nikon S3 Black Paint, early-production model. This is an original black-paint example from the 631xxxx serial-number range, and is different from the later reissued Nikon S3, commonly known as the Olympic model.

The original black S3 was produced with 631xxxx serial numbers, while the Olympic version has 632xxxx numbers. Production consisted of two batches, one of 50 cameras and another of 200, for a total of only 250 cameras. This example is from the batch of 200. We have previously handled another example with a serial number very close to this one.

Many of these early black-paint S3 cameras were heavily used by professionals and are now quite worn. This example appears to have had its shutter curtains and bottom plate replaced during later maintenance by Nippon Kogaku.

Cameras from this batch were originally fitted with cloth shutter curtains, but this example has titanium curtains. The bottom plate would also originally have had an ASA scale up to 400, whereas this one is marked up to 1600 and also bears a MADE IN JAPAN engraving, indicating a later specification. The overall appearance of the camera and bottom plate matches well, suggesting that it has been used in this configuration for many years.

A camera with plenty of history and a strong, well-used character.

There is some loss of black paint on various parts, along with minor dings on the top cover and bottom plate, giving it the appearance of a camera that has seen plenty of use over the years. It has a distinctly professional character. Pair it with a 35mm f1.8 or f2.5 lens in similarly well-used condition, and it should make a very handsome combination.

The previous owner had the camera overhauled a few years ago, and all functions are working properly. The film advance lever operates smoothly, and the finder is clear.
