Leica IIIc Gray, serial number in the 380,000 range, manufactured in 1942. A rare model produced in limited numbers during World War II.
Examples supplied to the German military are often found with markings such as Luftwaffen-Eigentum, Heer, or W.H. This example, however, is said to be the civilian version of the military gray IIIc. Needless to say, all of the paint is original.
The distinctive bluish-gray paint gives the camera a particularly striking appearance, while the various fittings are finished in chrome plating. The bulb setting on the shutter speed dial, traditionally marked Z since the Leica Model A, had by this time changed to B.
Matched with a period-correct Summitar, Elmar, or similar lens, it would make a wonderfully atmospheric combination. A very rare piece.
This is an item previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by its owner and has now returned to us. This is the third time we have had the pleasure of offering it for sale.
It remains in the same good condition as when we last sold it. Brass is exposed on various edges and surfaces, giving the camera a wonderfully aged character. There is a minor ding near the serial number on the top cover. The vulcanite on the back of Leica IIIc Gray bodies is often found cracked, and this example is no exception, with a vertical crack in the center of the rear covering. It has already been repaired, so it is unlikely to spread any further.
The previous owner continued to use the camera regularly until recently, and all functions operate smoothly. The viewfinder and rangefinder are both clear and bright.
A fine example to enjoy as a practical camera while also being worthy of a collection. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a Barnack Leica with a distinctive character.
