An early Leica M2 with the popular button rewind and no self-timer. Serial number in the 930,000 range, made in 1958. Leica code name: KOOHE.
This example comes from the second production batch, serial numbers 929001–931000, following the first batch of Leica M2 cameras produced in 1957, serial numbers 926001–926200.
It has the large tripod thread. The 35mm, 50mm, and 90mm bright-line frames are displayed individually.
Among the early button-rewind M2 cameras, this is one of the earliest versions. The rewind button does not lock in the depressed position, so it must be held down continuously while rewinding the film. This gives it a distinctive operating feel quite unlike other Leica M cameras.
Simply replacing the rewind lever with a button gives the camera a remarkably clean and refined appearance. The narrow vertically slotted, internally serrated illumination window is also different from that of later M2 cameras, giving this early version an even more modern look.
A camera that makes you want to fit a chrome wide-angle lens such as a Steel Rim Summilux or 8-element Summicron, perhaps add a Leicavit MP, and simply wander the streets with it.
Originally sold by our shop, this camera has been carefully used by our customer and has now returned to us. It remains in the same clean, very good condition as when we last sold it.
There are a few very light scratches on the top cover and baseplate, two small marks near the baseplate locking key, and one small dent below the ASA indicator on the back door. Overall, however, the camera is in very clean condition. All of the vulcanite is original and remains intact with no chips or missing pieces.
Fully overhauled in 2025. The shutter, film advance, and other controls remain smooth in operation, and the finder is clear and bright. It was in regular use by one of our customers until recently and is ready to be enjoyed with confidence.
