This example has a serial number in the 1.76 million range and was made in 1960. The Leitz product code is 11918, with the earlier codes SOOIC-MN or SOMNI. The focusing scale is marked in both meters and feet.
The lens alone focuses down to 1m. With the close-focus goggles attached, it can focus to approximately 0.5m, while also providing parallax correction. The superb precision and beautifully smooth operation are typical of Leitz products from its golden age.
If you use an M-series Leica and often find yourself wishing you could focus just a little closer, this is the kind of lens that may gradually become hard to resist.
Please note that it cannot be used on digital M-series Leica cameras up to the M10, as the lens interferes with the rangefinder roller. It can be used without issue on the current M11.
For close-up shooting on the M11 or mirrorless cameras without the goggles, there is a simple technique to make it work. Please feel free to ask us for details.
There are a few small scratches on the lens barrel near the goggle mounting area. Light rubbing can also be seen around the base of the barrel and on the helicoid ring, though these are not noticeable from a distance. Otherwise, including the goggles, there are no noticeable scratches or dents, and the overall appearance is very clean. The chrome plating is also in very good condition.
A full overhaul was completed in September 2026. The aperture has pleasantly defined click stops, and the helicoid has just the right amount of torque. All controls operate exceptionally smoothly. Rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy are both excellent.
There is very slight coating deterioration on the front and internal elements, but it is only visible when examined under a strong LED light and should have virtually no effect on image quality. Otherwise, there is no haze or noticeable cleaning marks. The finder goggles have also been thoroughly cleaned, and the glass is in excellent condition.
Our test shots with a Leica M11 produced excellent results, showing exactly why the DR Summicron has earned such a strong reputation.
