The Noctilux 50mm f1.0, E58 version. Leitz product code 11821. This example is from an early production batch, with a serial number in the 2.75 million range, and was manufactured by Leitz Canada in 1975.

It features a modified Gauss-type optical design with 7 elements in 6 groups, incorporating newly developed glass and an air lens. It is one of Leitz’s celebrated masterpieces, capable of producing exceptional images even in low-light conditions.

Compared with its f1.2 predecessor, this lens is particularly notable for its softer, more delicate rendering wide open. The extremely shallow depth of field at f1.0 is astonishing, and the creative possibilities it offers are truly unique.

Its popularity and value have risen sharply in recent years, but considering its remarkable capabilities, it is easy to understand why this lens remains so highly sought after.

The barrel retains a deep, beautiful black finish with virtually no visible signs of use. It is clean enough to look perfectly at home even on a brand-new digital Leica M.

A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in 2026. Thanks to the careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid operate exceptionally smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is also excellent, allowing precise focusing through the rangefinder even when shooting wide open.

Under a strong LED light, slight coating deterioration can just barely be detected. However, there is no haze or cleaning marks. This lens is fully capable of delivering its original performance.
