A very early Leica IIIf. The Leitz code name is LOOHN.

The Leica IIIf was introduced in 1950, starting from serial number #525001, and this example is the 304th IIIf produced, with serial number #525304.

At first glance, it looks much the same as later IIIf cameras, but a closer inspection reveals many small differences. Compare it with your own IIIf!

・The shape of the sync guide tab, one of the defining features of the IIIf, differs from later examples. It is flat, the so-called flat tab. Overseas, this version is sometimes referred to as the Flat Dial, rather than the Black Dial, haha.

・The serial number is marked No. rather than Nr., the same style used up through the previous IIIc and IIId models. The Germany engraving also uses the older typeface. Somehow, it gives the camera a more classical appearance.

・The finder eyepiece is not made of plastic, but of black-painted brass, as on the IIIc and earlier models. Again, somehow classical.

・The matte bead-blasted chrome finish on the body is slightly shinier and more lustrous than on later IIIf cameras. Once again, it has a somewhat classical look.

・There is no stopper pin on the A side of the rewind A-R lever.

・The baseplate has no film guide. A later baseplate with the guide will not fit. This is quite an important point.

・The ASA indicator on the winding knob is marked ASA-WESTON rather than ASA-DIN.

・According to the repair technician who performed the full overhaul, the construction of the shutter speed dial and the number of screws securing the front plate also differ from those of a standard IIIf.

A closer inspection would probably reveal even more differences. A camera that is enjoyable both to shoot with and to research.

A fine addition to a collection!

This item was previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by its previous owner and has now returned to us.

There are some light rub marks on various parts of the body, along with slight deterioration to the chrome plating. There are no dents or impacts. The gutta-percha is free from chips and remains original from the period.

It received a full overhaul in 2024. Thanks to careful servicing, all functions remain in excellent working order. The finder is clear and bright, and the rangefinder double image has good contrast.

A rare, very early Leica IIIf that is also well suited for practical use. For those who want something just a little different from everyone else. A rare find.
