The legendary Thambar 90mm f2.2. Leitz product code TOODY. Introduced in 1935. This example has a serial number in the 370,000 range and was made in 1937. It features 4 elements in 3 groups, an E48 filter thread, and a distance scale in meters.
The Thambar is the only soft-focus lens ever made by Leitz. In recent years, Leica unexpectedly released a modern reissue, which attracted considerable attention.
For soft-focus portrait photography, attach the dedicated filter and use the aperture scale marked in red. For normal photography without the filter, use the aperture index marked in white.
There are slight rub marks around the front edge of the barrel from attaching and removing the hood. There is also some minor unevenness in the paint below the aperture ring and around the base of the barrel, but all of the paint is completely original.
Otherwise, there are no noticeable scratches or rub marks. The beautiful, rich luster of the piano-black finish gives the lens a very clean appearance. It is in remarkably fine condition for a Thambar.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was carried out in August 2026. Careful servicing has made both the aperture ring and helicoid exceptionally smooth to operate. The rangefinder coupling was also meticulously adjusted and is spot-on. During the overhaul, the matte anti-reflection lacquer on the inside of the barrel was carefully reapplied, which should help produce even cleaner, more defined images.
There are some faint cleaning marks on the middle elements that are only visible depending on the angle of the light, but they should have no effect on actual photographs. There is no haze, and the glass is clear and bright.
The results of our shooting test were excellent. With precise rangefinder coupling, this is a truly enjoyable lens to use, allowing you to fully experience the wonderfully dreamlike rendering that makes the Thambar so special.
The original filter, an essential accessory for the Thambar, is included along with the original hood, hood cap, rear cap, and original box. An excellent choice for a collection as well.
