The Hektor 73mm f1.9 is one of the classic medium telephoto lenses from prewar Leitz, finished in beautiful black paint and nickel plating. The Leitz code is HEKON.
This example has a serial number in the 120,000 range and was made in 1932, the first year of production for the Hektor 73mm. The helicoid distance scale is in feet, with a rotating helicoid focusing mechanism. It was originally designed for slip-on filters, but 39mm screw-in filters can also be used.
At or near wide open, the lens produces a soft rendering with a gentle glow, giving it a distinctly vintage character. As the lens is stopped down, resolution increases and the subject becomes more clearly defined.
Apertures from f3.2 to f6.3 are especially practical, but we would also recommend actively using it from wide open to around f2.2 to enjoy the distinctive rendering of this classic lens.
There is some paint loss on the vertical knurling of the helicoid, along with slight paint loss on some of the edges. However, considering that more than 90 years have passed since its manufacture and that many Hektor 7.3cm lenses have seen heavy use, this example is in quite clean cosmetic condition. The nickel plating and silver inlaid markings also retain an attractive subdued shine.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in September 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture and helicoid rings operate very smoothly and feel exceptionally pleasant to use. Rangefinder coupling and focus are both accurate.
This example can also be used with rangefinder coupling down to approximately 1.1m, closer than the marked minimum focusing distance of 5 feet, around 1.5m. A Hektor that lets you get just a little closer than usual.
When viewed under a strong LED light, the glass shows some light cleaning marks and age-related discoloration in the internal elements. However, compared with many Hektor 73mm lenses, which often have rather rough glass condition, this example is quite clean. The results of our shooting test were also excellent. We found this particular lens to have especially good focus.
The original hood, hood cap, and rear cap are included. The hood has one dent, but it has been carefully corrected.
