The reissue Elmar 50mm f2.8 in chrome finish, with Leica M mount. The Leitz product code is 11823. It was first reintroduced in 1994 for the M6J, which sparked renewed interest in the long-popular Elmar. In 1995, production of the lens as a standalone model began, and this reissue version became a regular part of the Leica lens lineup.

This example has a serial number in the 3.73 million range and was manufactured in 1996. It has no 6-bit coding. While its design recalls the classic Elmar 5cm f2.8, it was substantially improved, including the adoption of a straight helicoid.

The exterior design was also simplified by eliminating the infinity lock. The minimum focusing distance was shortened to 0.7m, allowing much closer focusing than the original.

While retaining the retro collapsible design, it has a modern overall appearance and finish that pairs beautifully with current Leica M cameras as well as digital M bodies.

A black version of this reissue Elmar was also available, but when it comes to the richness and quality of the finish, the chrome version is hard to beat. Beautifully made.

A truly like-new example in every sense, with no signs of use. It would look right at home even on a brand-new camera body.

Fully overhauled in August 2026. The aperture and helicoid now operate with remarkably smooth action. It feels like a completely different lens compared with before the overhaul. Rangefinder coupling is also spot-on.

Matching its beautiful exterior, the glass is exceptionally clear and bright, with no haze or cleaning marks. You can fully enjoy the lens at its original performance.
