Leica M4 in chrome. Serial number in the 1.19 million range, manufactured in 1968/69. Made in Germany. Leitz product code 10400.
The M4 was introduced in 1967 as the successor to the Leica M3 and M2. It features the rapid-loading system and rewind crank, and includes bright-line frames for 35, 50, 90, and 135mm lenses.
From the M4 onward, the basic appearance and functionality of the Leica M series were largely carried forward, all the way to the current Leica M-A. Its highly refined design and operation became the foundation for later mechanical Leica M cameras.
The M4 was offered in three main finishes: standard chrome, black paint, and black chrome. Both German-made and Canadian-made versions exist, along with variants such as the motor-compatible M4-M, making the M4 a model with a surprisingly wide range of variations.
A very beautiful Leica M4, in exceptionally fine condition and close to like-new.
Apart from a few extremely light scuffs on the side of the top cover near the film advance lever and toward the rear, there are virtually no signs of use. Areas that commonly show wear, such as the base plate, strap lug areas, and lens mount, are all remarkably clean. The vulcanite is also fully original with no signs of repair, and the texture remains crisp and well defined.
A full overhaul was completed in September 2026. All controls now operate very smoothly. The finder is exceptionally clear, and the rangefinder patch retains strong contrast.
A body cap, German-language catalog, and original box are included.
A very difficult example to find in such outstanding condition.
