A Leica Model A fitted with an early Elmar, manufactured in 1928. Serial number in the 11xxx range, with distance markings in meters. The Leitz product code is the illustrious LEICA. This is where the uninterrupted history of Leica, continuing to the present day, began.
All components are original to the period. It features the dimpled shutter release, low-profile winding and rewind knobs, and the coarse-textured early-type gutta-percha covering. The knurling on the knobs, shutter speed dial, and front rim of the lens is also consistent throughout. The name ring of the early Elmar bears the charming small lettering characteristic of early Model A cameras. The baseplate is the early latch type and is marked auf and zu in German, suggesting that this camera was originally sold for the domestic German market.
The paint wear is beautifully balanced, giving the impression that the camera was cherished and carefully used over many years. Even after nearly a century, it remains in fine condition. A period-correct lens cap with matching wear is included.

Previously sold by our shop, this camera was carefully used by its owner and has now returned to us.
There is one small dent on the upper corner of the finder. The black paint has worn away along the body edges and accessory shoe, revealing the brass beneath and giving the camera a wonderfully aged character. The silver inlays also remain clearly visible.
It received a full overhaul in 2023, including replacement of the shutter curtains. All functions remain in the same good working order as when we previously sold it. The included early Elmar is also clean, with no noticeable cleaning marks.
As an important operating note, early Leica A models require the shutter release to be held down continuously while rewinding.
Also, as is occasionally seen with Barnack Leicas from the sheet-metal body era, the gap between the film transport sprocket and the body shell has been slightly wide since manufacture. As a result, the winding knob may continue to turn even after the roll has reached its final exposure. Please set the film counter carefully when loading the camera, and rewind the film once the specified number of exposures has been completed, in accordance with the traditional operating method of the period.
Comes with a period-correct original front lens cap that perfectly matches the camera. An early Leica A from 100 years ago, in practical condition and ready to be enjoyed without hesitation.
