An early version of the Summilux 50mm f1.4, featuring the reverse knurling. Commonly known as the Lady, or the 1st version. Beautiful chrome finish. The Leitz product code is SOOME, later changed to 11114. Serial number in the 1.64 million range, manufactured in 1958. E43 filter size. Compatible hoods include XOOIM, 12521G, and 12586. The coating has a predominantly purple tint.
The pre-redesign Summilux 50mm 1st is a highly sought-after model, admired for the distinctive softness of its early optical design when used wide open or near wide open. Stop it down by just one stop and the rendering tightens up considerably, producing crisp images with an appealing sense of depth. Both its gentle rendering wide open and its sharp, three-dimensional character when stopped down are equally attractive. It is a remarkably versatile lens with a broad expressive range.
The late 1950s were an especially fascinating period for Leica, with many highly desirable models produced around this time, including the Leica MP, early M2 bodies, and the first batch of black paint M3 cameras. It was one of the golden eras of postwar Leitz, filled with beautifully finished cameras and lenses of exceptionally refined design. This reverse-knurled Summilux is no exception, with its elegant, dignified appearance and superb finish making it particularly irresistible to Leica enthusiasts.
The only obvious difference from the standard Summilux 1st is the pattern of the knurling, yet somehow it seems to possess an even more lustrous and graceful presence. Perhaps that is simply the bias of someone who has a weakness for early versions. Among the many lenses produced by Leitz, this is surely one of the most distinguished.
There are some light scuffs around the base of the lens barrel, slightly more noticeable than elsewhere. Otherwise, there are no significant scratches, and the overall appearance is clean and attractive.
A full overhaul was completed in September 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate with a superbly smooth feel. Focus is accurate, and rangefinder coupling works perfectly.
Under a strong LED light, some whitish deterioration of the coating can be seen along the edge of an internal element, but this should have no effect on actual images. There are also a few extremely light cleaning marks on the front element. Otherwise, there are hardly any cleaning marks, and the original coating remains intact across all lens surfaces.
