The Elmarit 28mm f2.8, the highly sought-after early second-generation version with a stopper. Leica product code 11801R.
This example has a serial number in the 2.31 million range and was manufactured by Leitz Canada in 1969.
Compared with the first version, the optical design was revised to 8 elements in 6 groups, with one fewer element, and adopted a retrofocus design. The rear element protrudes less, allowing the lens to be used without issue on the Leica M5, Leica CL, mirrorless digital cameras, and other models. On Leica cameras from the M4-P onward, it brings up the 28mm framelines.
It also requires no exposure compensation when used with camera bodies equipped with built-in light meters, making it highly practical. When stopped down slightly to around f4 to f5.6, the rendering in the central area has a particularly impressive three-dimensional quality.
It accepts E48 filters. Alternatively, Series 7 filters can be used together with the 12501 hood.
Originally sold by our store, this lens was carefully used by its owner and has now returned to us. This will be the third time we have offered it for sale. It remains in the same beautiful condition as when previously sold.
There are four tiny spots of paint loss around the front edge where the hood tabs make contact. Otherwise, there is hardly any rubbing or other sign of use, and the exterior remains exceptionally clean.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in 2026. The aperture ring has pleasantly defined click stops, while the helicoid operates with a smooth, well-damped feel. Even the engagement of the infinity stopper has been finely tuned. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and focusing accuracy is excellent.
There are two or three extremely faint cleaning marks on the front element, along with slight coating deterioration around the edge of an internal element. Neither should have any noticeable effect on actual photographs.
The results of our test shooting were also excellent.
With its high contrast and resolving power, combined with gentle softness and falloff toward the edges, this lens produces images with a particularly appealing atmosphere. This early version with the stopper is a somewhat rare and highly sought-after model, often specifically requested by collectors and users alike.
The 12501 hood, Series 7 filter, original rear cap, and a third-party hood cap are included.
