Noctilux 50mm f1.0, the highly sought-after E58 model. Leitz product code 11821. This example has a serial number in the 2.85 million range and was manufactured in 1977. The optical glass was developed in Germany, while the lens was designed and manufactured by Leitz Canada.

It features a modified double-Gauss optical design with 7 elements in 6 groups. Newly developed glass and an air lens made it possible to achieve the remarkable maximum aperture of f1.0. One of Leitz’s legendary lenses, it delivers outstanding images even in extremely low-light conditions.

Compared with its predecessor, the Noctilux f1.2 with aspherical elements, this lens is distinguished by its softer, more delicate rendering wide open. The exceptionally shallow depth of field at f1.0 is astonishing. Some light fall-off is visible around the edges when shooting near maximum aperture, but using these characteristics creatively offers a truly unique photographic experience. Prices have risen considerably with its growing popularity in recent years, but its exceptional capabilities make that popularity entirely understandable.

Previously sold by our shop, this lens was carefully used by its owner and has now returned to us.

Its condition remains unchanged since our previous sale and is very good for practical use. There are some scuff marks from attaching and removing the hood around the front edge of the barrel, along with some paint loss on the edge of the aperture ring, but overall it remains in quite good condition.

It received a full overhaul in 2026. The aperture ring and helicoid operate smoothly with an appropriate amount of torque, and the rangefinder coupling is spot-on.

When shooting wide open at close distances, a delicate veil appears around the plane of focus. The way its rendering changes dramatically depending on the shooting distance is part of what makes this lens so fascinating.

There is minor coating deterioration on the front and internal elements, one extremely faint linear scratch, and some traces of fungus along the edge of the rear element that could not be completely removed during cleaning. Otherwise, there are no noticeable cleaning marks or haze. The results of our test shooting were also excellent. You can enjoy the rich, distinctive rendering for which the E58 Noctilux is renowned.
