The legendary Summilux 35mm f1.4 1st version, commonly known as the Steel Rim. This example has a serial number in the 1.77 million range and was manufactured in 1960.
In recent years, Leica surprised enthusiasts by releasing a reissue of the Steel Rim, which attracted considerable attention. This, however, is the original.

It features a 7-element optical design in 5 groups. Wide open and at apertures close to maximum, it produces beautifully dreamlike rendering with a veil-like glow and delicate softness. Stop it down, and the character changes dramatically, delivering crisp, razor-sharp images. The clarity and three-dimensional rendering at slightly stopped-down apertures are particularly impressive.
Every generation of the Summilux has its own appeal, but the style and build quality of this 1st version are truly exceptional. Fitted with its dedicated OLLUX hood, it is arguably one of the most handsome Leitz lenses ever made. The chrome Steel Rim looks superb not only on chrome bodies, but also on black paint and black chrome cameras.

This lens was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us after being carefully used by its owner.
There are hardly any signs of use, and the exterior is in beautiful condition. The matte bead-blasted chrome retains its lovely texture, with no noticeable scratches or dents.
A full overhaul was completed in 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid operate with an exceptionally smooth and satisfying feel, allowing you to concentrate on shooting without distraction. Rangefinder coupling is also excellent.
The front element shows faint traces of fungus that could not be completely removed during cleaning, along with some coating deterioration. There are also two small areas of balsam separation in the front lens group, but these should have little to no effect on actual photographs. Otherwise, the glass is clear and bright, with no noticeable cleaning marks or haze.

Near wide open, it produces a soft and airy image while still revealing remarkably fine and delicate detail. Stopping down one or two stops gradually reduces the flare, yet its distinctive rich and gentle rendering remains, creating a beautifully atmospheric look. By around f5.6, its character transforms dramatically into a crisp, punchy, and richly rendered image. This is a legendary lens with many different sides to enjoy, and one that becomes increasingly rewarding as you learn how to make the most of it.
Included are our specially made FB-05 front cap for the Steel Rim, a genuine Leica E41 UVa filter, and a rear cap.
