An early version of the Summicron-R 35mm f2 for the Leicaflex, commonly known as the tapered Summicron or the 9-element Summicron. Serial number in the 2.46 million range, manufactured in 1970 by Leitz Canada. It features a 9-element design in 7 groups.

The lens has been converted to 3-cam specification and can also be used with Leica R-series cameras. The coatings display amber and purple hues.

This is a large, heavy, and robust lens that stands in complete contrast to the modern trend toward smaller and lighter designs, yet it is a legendary optic capable of producing truly inspiring images. Its minimum focusing distance of just 30cm is another welcome feature.

Previously sold by our shop, this lens was carefully used by its owner and has now returned to us. This will be the third time we have offered it for sale.

Its condition remains unchanged since the previous sale. There is some loss of black paint along the edges of the helicoid and aperture rings, but no noticeable scratches or scuffs. Overall, it is in good cosmetic condition for a Leica R lens.

It received a full overhaul in 2024. Thanks to the thorough servicing, both the helicoid and aperture ring still operate with a smooth, pleasantly damped feel.

The front element has a few extremely faint hairline marks that are only visible under a strong LED light, and one of the inner elements shows slight coating deterioration, but neither should have any practical effect on image quality. Otherwise, there are no noticeable scratches or haze, and the glass is beautifully clear with excellent clarity. Overall, this is a remarkably clean example of the tapered Summicron.

It comes with a 12509 hood that accepts Series 7 filters, front and rear caps, and a later-period Leitz soft case.
