Leica IIIa, a Barnack Leica from the sheet-metal body era, introduced in 1935. The Leitz product code is AGNOO. This example dates from 1939 and has a serial number in the 330,000 range. It is fitted with the larger tripod thread.

The IIIa added a top shutter speed of 1/1000 second to the Leica III and was reportedly widely used for sports photography at the time.

Black-painted bodies had been the standard through the Leica III, but from the IIIa onward, chrome finish gradually became the mainstream choice for Barnack Leicas. Features introduced with the Leica III, including strap lugs, diopter adjustment, and slow shutter speeds, were retained, making the IIIa an appealing and practical Barnack Leica.

Its compact size is ideal for pairing with lenses such as a collapsible Elmar or Elmar 35mm and carrying discreetly in a pocket. It also offers a distinctly different feel from the die-cast models introduced with the IIIc, with a body that sits softly and comfortably in the hand.

Previously sold by our shop, this camera has been carefully used by its owners and has now returned to us for the third time. Welcome home!

Its condition remains unchanged since our previous sale. There is a single line scratch on the baseplate, along with some minor rubbing and other light signs of use. Even so, it is remarkably clean for a Leica IIIa, as most surviving examples have seen considerable use. There are, of course, no noticeable scratches, dents, or impacts.

The sharply defined body edges, beautifully chromed top cover, and finely finished dials vividly convey the exceptional craftsmanship of Leica at its pre-war peak. The vulcanite is also the original covering from the period, and its smooth, dry texture makes the camera especially satisfying to hold.

It received a full overhaul in 2023 and remains in excellent working order thanks to the careful servicing. All controls operate smoothly, and the finder provides a clear and pleasant view.
