Lumax 50mm f1.9, made for Corfield in England. This was a standard lens for the Periflex, the highly unconventional SLR with its periscope-style focusing system. Although it is not rangefinder-coupled, it uses the Leica screw mount and has the same flange focal distance as Leica. With an L/M adapter, it can also be enjoyed on Leica M-mount cameras.
It has a 5 elements in 4 groups optical design. Manufactured in West Germany under license from Wray of England, it was most likely produced by Enna.
Like the Periflex itself, the equally eccentric British Wrayflex is also rather demanding when it comes to focusing. The Lumax is said to use the same Unilite-type 5 elements in 4 groups optical design as the Unilite 50mm f2 made for the Wrayflex, a design related to the Biometar and Xenotar types.
The filter size is 52mm. Distance scale in feet. The lens can focus as close as approximately 31cm from the front of the lens. Thanks to its aluminum barrel, it weighs only 183g despite its bright f1.9 maximum aperture.

This is an item previously sold by our shop that has now returned to us. The barrel shows some scuffs and paint wear from use, but there are no noticeable scratches or dents.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was completed in 2024. Thanks to the careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid still operate smoothly even two years later.
The front element shows a fair number of shallow cleaning marks. These may have some effect under strong lighting conditions, but our test shots showed little flare and produced very calm, pleasing images. It is quite a nice performer.
