A Leica CL with its standard lens, the Summicron-C 40mm f2. The Leitz product code for the set with the 40mm lens is 11542. Introduced in 1973, this compact Leica was developed through the partnership between Leitz and Minolta. This example has a serial number in the 1.3 million range and was manufactured in 1973/74.
The CL features mechanisms different from those of the Leica M series, including 40mm frame lines and a vertically travelling shutter. The viewfinder also includes 50mm and 90mm frame lines. Despite its compact size, it offers all the essential functions and is one of those classic cameras whose qualities become increasingly apparent the more you use it.
With its perfectly balanced 40mm angle of view, the Summicron-C is an excellent choice for street photography and travel. Its minimum focusing distance of 80cm is another welcome feature, allowing you to get reasonably close to your subject.
Series 5.5 filters are fitted by placing them inside the rubber lens hood. E39 filters can also be inserted, but as the thread pitch is different, they will only screw in partway.
There are a couple of extremely small marks on the corner near the film advance lever and along the edge of the shutter release collar, but they are hardly noticeable. Overall, the camera shows very little sign of use and is in remarkably clean condition for a Leica CL. A very pleasant example to use.
In August 2026, the lens received a full overhaul, and the camera body was serviced, including replacement of the light seals and adjustment of the viewfinder. All functions now operate smoothly. The exposure meter is also working accurately.
The Summicron-C lens has a few very light cleaning marks and extremely minor coating deterioration that is only visible under strong LED light, but these should have virtually no effect on actual photographs. Considering that many examples of this lens suffer from persistent haze that cannot be removed, the glass on this one is exceptionally clean.
