An early Rolleiflex 3.5 MX-EVS twin-lens reflex camera made by Franke & Heidecke in Germany. Also known as the 3.5C. Its serial number is in the 1.48 million range, dating it to around 1954, the same period in which the Leica M3 was introduced.
Its carefully constructed yet lightweight body is fitted with the renowned Tessar f3.5 lens. Evolved from the Rolleiflex Automat, this model represents one of the fully developed forms of the classic Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex and is exceptionally easy to use.
The handling and rendering have a distinctive character quite different from the more luxurious later bodies such as the 3.5F and 2.8F. An underrated classic among Rolleiflex cameras. The actual weight is 1,030g.
As this is an early version, the light-value coupling is disengaged by pressing the centre of the aperture control dial while turning it.
Incidentally, the Rolleiflex used by photographer Vivian Maier is believed to have been the Automat Model 4, the model immediately preceding this MX-EVS.
Although the MX-EVS was produced for only two years, a reasonable number were manufactured. Even so, an example in such exceptionally clean condition is rarely encountered.
Previously sold by our shop, this camera has now returned to us after being enjoyed by its owner. A reassuring return item with a known history.
Its exterior remains as clean as when we last sold it. There is some paint loss at the upper left and right corners of the ROLLEIFLEX nameplate, but otherwise there are virtually no signs of use, and the camera is exceptionally clean. The paint and plating around the focusing hood, film advance lever, lens board, tripod mount, and other areas remain in beautiful condition.
Fully overhauled in 2026. All functions operate smoothly, including the film advance and focusing mechanism. The finder is also clear and bright.
There are some spots on the front element of the taking lens caused by deterioration of the coating, but they are unlikely to have any noticeable effect on image quality.
A leather case and lens cap are included.
