The Elmarit 28mm f2.8, the highly sought-after second version with infinity stopper. This is the early type of the second-generation Elmarit. The Leica product code is 11801R.
The serial number is in the 2.31 million range, dating the lens to 1969. Manufactured by Leitz Canada.
The optical design was revised from the 9-element first version to an 8 elements in 6 groups retrofocus design. The rear element protrudes far less, allowing the lens to be used without issue on the Leica M5, Leica CL, and digital mirrorless cameras.
As this lens was produced during a transitional period, it brings up the 35mm and 135mm bright-line frames when mounted on a camera body.
It accepts E48 filters. Alternatively, Series 7 filters can be used together with the 12501 hood.
Originally sold by our shop, this lens was carefully used by its previous owner and has now returned to us.
There is some wear to the black chrome finish around the front of the barrel and on the aperture ring.
A full overhaul, including focus adjustment, was carried out in 2022. Thanks to the careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid remain exceptionally smooth in operation.
The front element has a few small marks and cleaning marks, and there is slight deterioration to the coating on several surfaces, though these are unlikely to have any noticeable effect on image quality. The results of our test shooting were also excellent.
Its atmospheric rendering wide open, with some fall-off toward the corners, is highly appealing, while stopping down slightly produces wonderfully clear and crisp images. It is also an excellent choice as a travel lens.
A 12501 hood and E48 UVa filter are included. The E48 filter is the less commonly seen black-rimmed version. With these useful accessories included, the lens is ready to be taken out and enjoyed straight away.
