The final version of the legendary Nikkor-P.C 8.5cm f2. Black barrel, Nikon S mount, external bayonet. The Nikkor 85mm was introduced in 1948, with the early versions featuring chrome-plated barrels. It uses a Sonnar-type optical design with 5 elements in 3 groups. The filter size is 48mm, and the distance scale is marked in feet.
Wide open, it delivers a slightly soft rendering while beautifully combining rich tonal gradation with high contrast. Stopped down to around f4, the corner falloff largely disappears, rendering becomes more even across the frame, contrast increases, and the image becomes remarkably sharp.
This is a historically significant lens that helped establish the outstanding reputation of Japanese optics worldwide after renowned photographer D.D. Duncan used and highly praised it during the Korean War.
The later black-barrel version is somewhat scarce. Its handsome design looks equally at home on both chrome and black camera bodies. It can also be enjoyed on modern mirrorless digital cameras via an appropriate adapter.
The barrel and hood are beautifully made, and simply holding the lens conveys a wonderful sense of precision and craftsmanship. It is the kind of lens that is very easy to become attached to.
The barrel is in beautiful condition, showing only minimal signs of use. The black paint remains deep and rich, while the chrome plating is also in excellent condition with a brilliant shine.
The lens was serviced about two years ago under the previous owner. All functions operate properly. Focus has been checked using our Nikon S test body.
The glass is clear and bright with no haze. There are no noticeable scratches.
Includes the original hood, front and rear caps, and leather case.
