The third-generation Summicron-M 50mm f2. With this version, the lens officially adopted the Summicron-M name, following the naming convention still used today. The Leitz product code is 11819. Designed by Walter Mandler, the optical construction was revised from the second generation’s 6 elements in 5 groups to 6 elements in 4 groups.
The serial number is in the 3.57 million range, dating this example to 1991. Made in Germany.
Despite its relatively fast f2 maximum aperture, the lens is remarkably compact and lightweight, weighing just 197g on our scale. The minimum focusing distance is 0.7m, and the filter size is E39. With improved color balance and contrast, this is an exceptionally versatile and easy-to-use lens.
In like-new condition. There is a very slight loss of paint at the front edge of the barrel, but it is barely noticeable at a glance.
A full overhaul was completed in July 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate with a beautifully smooth and well-damped feel. Rangefinder coupling can sometimes be questionable on third-generation Summicrons, but this example couples perfectly.
The glass is clear and bright, with no haze or cleaning marks. An excellent optical example that allows you to fully enjoy the lens's original rendering.
