Summaron 35mm f3.5, early A36 version for Leica screw mount. Serial number in the 1.22 million range, made in 1954. Leitz product code: SOONC. A double-Gauss design with 6 elements in 4 groups. Distance scale in feet. Takes A36 clamp-on filters and the FOOKH lens hood.

Introduced in 1946 as the successor to the Elmar 35mm f3.5. Compared with the Elmar, it is slightly taller and heavier, yet still very compact and highly portable. Its classic design is another part of its old-lens charm.

The Summaron delivers high resolution in the center, while near wide open, its natural falloff toward the corners creates a wonderfully dramatic atmosphere. Despite its excellent rendering, production numbers were relatively high, keeping prices reasonable and making it one of Leica's most approachable classic wide-angle lenses.

However, the Summaron is also well known for being prone to haze, and its rendering can vary considerably depending on the condition of the glass.

The lens is in very clean cosmetic condition, with no noticeable scratches or signs of use. The chrome plating retains a beautiful shine.

It received a full overhaul in September 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture ring and helicoid operate very smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is also excellent. The matte anti-reflection lacquer inside the barrel has been carefully refinished, which should help produce a slightly crisper image.

The coating on two internal lens surfaces is missing, but this should have little to no effect on actual images. Otherwise, the glass is clear and bright, with no noticeable cleaning marks or haze. Test shots also produced very good results.
