Leica M4 chrome. Serial number in the 1,230,000 range, made in 1969. Made in Germany. Leitz product code 10400.

The M4 was introduced in 1967 as the successor to the Leica M3 and M2. It features a rapid loading system and rewind crank, and has built-in bright-line frames for 35mm, 50mm, 90mm, and 135mm lenses.

The exterior design and functionality of the M-series Leica, continuing all the way to the current Leica M-A, follow the style established by the M4. It is a highly refined camera in both design and function.

The M4 was produced in three main finishes: standard chrome, black paint, and black chrome. Various versions exist, including German-made and Canadian-made examples, as well as the motor-compatible M4-M.

This example is in like-new condition, with no signs of use. Even the baseplate, which is prone to scratches and rubbing, and the area around the strap lugs are extremely clean. There is not a single mark on the lens mount. The vulcanite is also fully original, with no signs of repair.

A rare example that has retained a condition close to new, as if it had travelled through time from 1969.

Overhauled in July 2026. Careful servicing has made all controls smooth and pleasant to operate. The finder is also clear and bright. A truly superb example.

A body cap, original box, and a 1969 German-language catalogue for the M4 are included. In this catalogue, the 8-element Summicron and the Noble Lady Summilux are shown in chrome finish, while the second-generation Summilux 35mm, 9-element Elmarit, and Tele-Elmarit 90mm are shown in black finish. Yellow scale and red scale lenses also appear side by side, giving a fascinating glimpse of the transitional period in Leitz product design. It is quite enjoyable simply to look through.

A condition that is very hard to find. Examples like this rarely appear today. Highly recommended for a collection.
