Dual Range Summicron 50mm f2. The final version of the close-focusing Summicron.
This example has a serial number in the 2,350,000 range and was manufactured in 1969. The Leitz product code is 11918, while the earlier code was SOOIC-MN or SOMNI. The helicoid has distance scales marked in both meters and feet.
The lens alone focuses down to 1m, but with the goggles attached, close-up photography is possible down to approximately 0.5m, with parallax correction provided at the same time. The superb manufacturing precision and beautifully smooth operation are truly impressive, as one would expect from a Leitz product made during the company's golden age.
This example is said to belong to a production batch made for the Leica M2-R. Naturally, the serial numbers on the lens head and helicoid match.
Please note that this lens cannot be used on digital Leica M models up to and including the M10, as it interferes with the rangefinder roller. It can be used without any problems on the M11.
For close-up photography without the goggles on the M11 or mirrorless cameras, all you need to know is a little trick. Please feel free to ask us for details.
There are quite a few small scratches on the mounting surface for the goggles. The focusing helicoid and aperture ring show very faint scuffs and small scratches, but these are hardly noticeable from a distance. Otherwise, there are no noticeable scratches or dents, including on the goggles, and the chrome plating remains in good condition.
Fully overhauled in October 2026. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the aperture ring has a pleasant click action, the focusing helicoid offers just the right amount of resistance, and all moving parts operate exceptionally smoothly. The rangefinder coupling works perfectly, and focusing accuracy is excellent.
There is some clouding-like deterioration of the coating around the periphery of the inner surface of the rear element. There are also a few extremely faint cleaning marks on the front element, but neither should have any significant effect on actual photographs.
In our test shots with the M11, the lens delivered the superb image quality one would expect from the DR! Sample images have been posted in our Sample Gallery. All were taken wide open. We hope you will take a look.
Original front and rear caps are included. The rear cap shows some discoloration.
