Introduced in 1954, the Leica M3 was the camera that established the golden age of Leitz. It featured the Leica M mount, which enabled quick lens changes and secure mounting; a superb built-in rangefinder viewfinder with automatic parallax correction; a beautifully resolved, function-driven design; a robust body engineered for reliable operation; and an exceptional level of construction and finish that rival manufacturers could not match.
The late-model M3 incorporated improvements to several minor shortcomings found in the earlier version and adopted the more conventional single-stroke film advance.
The ASA film-speed indicator on the back door would normally be expected to show 1300 for a camera from this period, but the one fitted to this example is marked up to 1000.
Beginning with the Leica M3, the M-series lineage continued through the M2, M4, M5, M6, M7, M8, M9, M10, and M11. The instantly recognisable appearance of a Leica M camera has all of its essential design elements concentrated in this original M3.
For photographers who mainly use 50mm lenses, the M3 is still regarded by many as the finest model, thanks above all to its unrivalled viewfinder.
This M3 shows relatively little use and remains in very good cosmetic condition. There is a tiny mark on the corner of the top cover near the Leica logo, along with some light rubbing and small scratches around the strap lugs, but overall, the body is exceptionally clean.
The gutta-percha is entirely original and remains in excellent condition, with its texture still crisp and a pleasant, dry feel in the hand.
A full overhaul was completed in July 2026, and all controls now operate smoothly. The film advance lever is exceptionally fluid, making it hard to resist firing the shutter just for the pleasure of it.
The viewfinder is free from haze and offers a bright, crystal-clear view. The rangefinder patch also has strong contrast.
