Tele-Elmarit 90mm black chrome. 11800. Serial number in the 2.21 million range, made in 1966. This example is an early black-barrel model born at Leitz Canada, with a sharp-looking red scale.
Although it is a telephoto lens, its overall length is close to that of a 50mm lens, and it is compact enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. The beautifully machined knurling, reminiscent of early Summilux lenses, and its elegant form are simply superb. Its moderate weight and well-positioned, easy-to-operate helicoid also make it highly practical. With a perfectly usable f2.8 maximum aperture and a rendering with just the right amount of softness, it has a well-earned reputation for producing beautiful images.
The black-barrel Tele-Elmarit with red lettering is quite rare. A simple change in lettering color gives it a noticeably different impression. Its appearance is also somewhat reminiscent of the black paint Summilux 50mm f1.4, and it should pair beautifully with black paint Leica M3, M2, or M4 bodies. A fine match for a well-used body with just the right amount of character.
This is an item previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by one of our customers, and has now returned to us once again. This will be the fifth time we have offered it for sale. It is truly a lens with a strong homing instinct, haha.
There is black chrome wear from use throughout the barrel, but no noticeable scratches or dents. The red and white engravings on the barrel have naturally faded, giving the lens a calm yet sharp appearance.
Fully overhauled in 2023. Thanks to careful servicing, the aperture ring and helicoid still operate very smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on.
The glass is clear and beautiful, with no cleaning marks or haze. The results of our test shooting were also excellent.
The all-black 12575 hood also shows some fading and moderate signs of use, matching the lens very well in condition and appearance. A 14033 hood cap is also included.
