Elmar 35mm f3.5 in nickel finish, one of the classic wide-angle lenses from prewar Leitz. The Leitz product code is EKURZKUP. Serial number in the 160,000 range, manufactured in 1933. 4 elements in 3 groups. Distance scale in feet. Rangefinder coupled. Half-turn helicoid.

Introduced in 1930, the Elmar 35mm evolved gradually over the years. With the introduction of the Leica DII in 1932, it became rangefinder coupled with the so-called heavy cam, and in 1933 the focusing helicoid was improved from the full-turn type to the half-turn type.

Second only to the Hektor 28mm in compactness among Leica lenses of the period, this is an exceptionally portable lens. Mounted on a black-and-nickel Leica DII or DIII, it creates a wonderfully period-correct appearance.

With the appropriate adapter, it can also be enjoyed on the latest digital M bodies and mirrorless cameras.

Elmar 3.5cm lenses from this period are normally uncoated, but this example was later given a pale blue coating by Leitz.

This item was previously sold by our shop and has now returned to us after being carefully used by its owner.

There are some minor scuffs and small marks, but no noticeable scratches or dents. For a nickel-finished lens over 90 years old, it remains in remarkably clean cosmetic condition.

It received a full overhaul when we sold it previously. To ensure it is in the best possible condition for this sale, it was overhauled once again in August 2026.

The aperture, helicoid, and all other controls operate exceptionally smoothly. Some Elmar 35mm lenses are known to have issues with rangefinder coupling, but this example couples properly throughout the entire focusing range, from the minimum focusing distance to infinity.

The front and rear elements show numerous very light cleaning marks. There is also some minor age-related deterioration of the glass, but unless shooting under strong backlight or similarly demanding conditions, the effect on image quality should be minimal.

The anti-reflection lacquer inside the barrel has been carefully reapplied, which should help produce images with better contrast. Perhaps also benefiting from the coating, this lens performed very well in our test shooting.
