Tele-Elmarit 90mm in black chrome. This is an early black-barrel model made by Leitz Canada, featuring the sharp-looking red scale. Leitz catalog number 11800. Serial number in the 2,140,000 range, manufactured in 1965.
Although it is a telephoto lens, its overall length is close to that of a 50mm lens, and it is compact enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. With beautifully executed knurling reminiscent of early Summilux lenses and an elegant barrel design, it is a very attractive piece. Its moderate weight and easy-to-operate helicoid position also make it highly practical. With a maximum aperture of f2.8, it is bright enough for real-world use, and its moderately soft rendering has earned it a fine reputation for beautiful image quality. This is a compact Leitz short telephoto lens that is always useful to keep tucked away in a camera bag.
The black-barrel Tele-Elmarit with red lettering is quite rare. It was produced shortly after the initial chrome-barrel version, which appeared in 1964. Simply changing the color of the lettering gives the lens a very different impression.
With a sharp, purposeful look reminiscent of the black paint Summilux 50mm f1.4, it should pair beautifully with black paint Leica M3, M2, and M4 bodies. It also looks perfectly at home on black chrome or black paint digital M bodies.
This item was previously sold by us and has now come back to us.
It shows moderate signs of use, including rubbing in various areas. This red scale version would pair beautifully with a well-used body. With its accessories included, this is an ideal lens for anyone who wants to take it out without hesitation and use it hard.
Fully overhauled in 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, both the aperture and helicoid still operate very smoothly. Even precise focusing can be performed with a high degree of accuracy. In our actual shooting tests with our demo Leica M10-P and M11 bodies, rangefinder coupling was spot-on.
The front element shows some coating deterioration and shallow cleaning marks. There are also some fungus marks on the middle and rear elements that could not be completely removed during cleaning, but the lens has been thoroughly cleaned. We tested it both indoors and outdoors, including backlit situations, and did not notice any effect on the images.
The results of our actual shooting tests were also very good. Sample images from the previous sale are shown in our Sample Gallery, so please take a look.
A period-matched 12575 lens hood, hood cap, Marumi UV filter, plastic case, and original box are included, so this set is ready to go straight out for shooting.
A special bargain for practical use. Please take it out and use it to your heart’s content!
