Elmarit 28mm f2.8, the popular second version with focusing lock. This is the early type of the second-generation Elmarit. Leica product code 11801R.
Serial number in the 2,310,000 range, made in 1969. Made by Leitz Canada.
Compared with the first version, the optical formula was changed to 8 elements in 6 groups, with one fewer glass element, and it adopted a retrofocus design. The rear element protrudes less, allowing it to be used without issue on the M5, Leica CL, mirrorless digital cameras, and other bodies. On the Leica M4-P and later models, the 28mm framelines are displayed.
It also requires no exposure compensation on bodies with built-in light meters, making it excellent for practical use. From f4 to f5.6, the sense of dimensionality in the center of the image when stopped down slightly is superb.
Compatible filters are E48. Alternatively, Series 7 filters can be used together with the 12501 hood.
With high contrast and strong resolving power, along with a pleasant softness and fall-off toward the edges, this lens produces a wonderfully atmospheric rendering. This early second version with focusing lock is a somewhat rare and popular model, often sought out specifically by collectors and users alike.
This is an item previously sold by our shop. It was carefully used by our customer and has now returned to us after six years. Its condition remains unchanged from when we last sold it, making it a very good user condition example.
There is some rubbing on the front edge of the barrel from attaching and removing the hood, but otherwise there are hardly any visible signs of wear, and the overall appearance is quite clean.
The aperture ring and helicoid move smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is also spot on.
The glass has two or three very faint cleaning marks on the front element, and there is a slight coating deterioration on an inner element, but neither should affect actual images. The results of our test shooting were also very good.
Comes with the 12501 hood, white-rim E48 filter, rear cap, and original box. The 12501 hood is very clean, and the E48 filter comes with its box and case. This is a set also suitable for collection.
