Leica A converted to DIII. Serial number in the 70,000 range. Originally manufactured in 1931 as a Leica A, this example was later upgraded to DIII specification.
This is an official Leitz conversion. Overseas, such examples are often referred to as factory conversions.
Bodies converted from Leica A models were built with many dedicated upgrade parts, making them highly elaborate. Details like this really show the Leitz spirit.
As a DIII, it is equipped with a coupled rangefinder with diopter adjustment, strap lugs, and slow shutter speeds, giving it more than enough functionality for practical use. The exterior features black paint and nickel plating. Together with its moderate signs of use, it has a very attractive vintage character.
There is some paint loss and plating wear on the corners, but overall the paint surface remains in good condition. There is also cracking in the gutta-percha covering below the slow-speed dial, but it is still firmly attached to the body, with no lifting or peeling.
Nearly 90 years have passed since its conversion to DIII in the 1930s, and this camera clearly shows that it has been used with great care over the years. It is a well-preserved example in good condition.
Overhauled in June 2026. The shutter and winding knob operate smoothly and very well. Haze has been removed from the finder, leaving a clear view. The rangefinder double image is also crisp and distinct.
Refreshed through this overhaul, this is a highly practical and enjoyable camera to use.
