Summilux 35mm f1.4, second generation, without infinity lock. Product code 11870. Made by Leitz Canada. Serial number in the 2,390,000 range, manufactured in 1970.
This large-aperture wide-angle lens is one of Leitz’s signature classics, and was a long-selling model produced for more than 30 years.
It has a 7 elements in 5 groups construction. The minimum focusing distance is approximately 90cm. The matching hood is the two-piece 12504, which allows Series 7 filters to be inserted between the two sections.
A true Leica 35mm standard that can be used for almost any purpose. Around wide open, it produces a soft, gentle rendering. Stopped down slightly, the sense of depth increases noticeably. Stopped down further, it draws sharp, beautiful lines while still retaining a calm, atmospheric character.
Compared with the Summicron, its rendering is finer and more delicate. Combining the charm of a classic lens with real-world practicality, this is a highly accomplished lens that also pairs beautifully with modern digital Leica M cameras.
The black chrome finish on the front hood mounting area has become slightly thin, and some paint loss can be seen in the groove where the hood tabs attach. Other than this, there are no notable scratches or dents. The barrel is quite clean overall, including the mount surface.
Fully overhauled in June 2026, including focus adjustment. Both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate with a very smooth and pleasant feel. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on, and focus accuracy is excellent.
There is very slight coating wear on the front element, but it should have virtually no effect on image quality. Otherwise, there is no haze or notable cleaning marks, and the glass is clear with excellent clarity. The results from actual shooting were also very good.
The 12504 hood and a genuine Series 7 filter are included. It is ready to take out and shoot with right away!
