The Leica M4 was developed as the successor to the Leica M3 and M2, bringing together and further refining the roles of both models.
With features such as the crank-style rewind lever still used on modern film Leicas, bright frames for 35/50/90/135mm lenses, and a spool-free quick-loading mechanism, it was highly complete in terms of functionality.
It was favored by many professional photographers, especially press photographers, including those who belonged to the world-renowned Magnum Photos collective.
This example is finished in black paint and is fully original.
The M4 was also available in chrome and black chrome finishes, but the black paint version is surely the most desirable. Over time, it develops a unique character, the so-called patina, giving each camera its own expression and individuality.
Another appealing point of the black paint M4 is that it pairs beautifully not only with black lenses, but also with chrome-finished lenses. In particular, fitted with a chrome steel-rim lens, it looks absolutely superb.
The winding lever shows bubbling, while the rewind crank, AR lever, accessory shoe, and other areas show natural brass exposure, giving this M4 BP a sharp and very atmospheric appearance.
There are minor dents above the serial number on the top cover, on the upper corner near the front finder window, and to the right of the flash bulb contact on the back. However, there is no damage that significantly detracts from its overall appearance. For a black paint Leica M4, this is certainly an upper-grade example.
Fully overhauled by a specialist repairer in June 2026. Everything from the feel of the winding lever to the mounting and removal of lenses has been finished with a very pleasing touch. The finder view is clear, and the rangefinder patch retains strong contrast.
Freshly serviced through this overhaul, this is a camera ready to be used hard and enjoyed to the fullest.
