Tele-Elmarit 90mm f2.8, black chrome finish. Made by Leitz Canada. This example is an early black-barrel model with the sharp-looking red scale engraving. Leitz catalog no. 11800. Serial number in the 2.14 million range, manufactured in 1965.
Despite being a telephoto lens, it is nearly the same length as a 50mm lens, fitting comfortably in the palm of your hand. The beautifully machined knurling recalls early Summilux lenses, giving it an elegant sculptural presence. Its moderate weight and well-positioned focusing helicoid also make it especially pleasant to use. With a practical maximum aperture of f2.8 and a rendering that combines gentle softness with excellent image character, it has earned a fine reputation for beautiful photographic results. A compact Leitz medium telephoto that proves surprisingly useful to keep tucked away in your camera bag.
The black-barrel, red-scale version of the Tele-Elmarit is quite rare. Introduced shortly after the original chrome-barrel version of 1964, this early black model was produced only in small numbers before transitioning to the later yellow scale engraving, as happened with many other Leitz lenses of the period. The change in engraving color alone gives the lens a dramatically different appearance. Its look is reminiscent of the black paint Summilux 50mm f1.4, and it pairs beautifully with black paint Leica bodies such as the Leica M3, Leica M2, and Leica M4.
Compatible hood: 12575. Filter size: E39.
Previously sold by our shop and now returned to us after being carefully cherished by its owner. Just as when we last sold it, the barrel remains in beautiful condition. There are a few pinhead-sized paint losses scattered here and there, but no noticeable scratches or dents, and overall signs of use are minimal.
Fully overhauled in 2025. The carefully tuned aperture retains its firm and satisfying click feel, while the helicoid remains beautifully smooth in operation. Rangefinder coupling and focus accuracy are both excellent.
The glass shows only the slightest coating deterioration, but there are no cleaning marks or haze, and it remains clear overall. The results from our test shooting were once again excellent.
Comes with the original rear cap.
