A left-hand shutter release attachment for Barnack Leica cameras. This special accessory was custom-made in the 1930s for left-handed users. It does not appear in Leica product catalogs and seems to have no official product code.
Very few cameras were ever designed with both right- and left-hand shutter release capability — perhaps only the Exakta Real truly fits that description. Cameras with dedicated left-hand releases, such as the Kodak Ektra and certain Exakta models, are exceedingly rare. True to Leitz’s long tradition of producing niche accessories with remarkable care, the company manufactured this attachment in very small numbers specifically for left-handed photographers.
Its construction is simple, making use of leverage to allow smooth and natural shutter operation with the left hand.
This example is for Barnack Leica models and can be mounted on the Leica DII through IIIf.
Please note that it cannot be used on the Leica Ic, If, or Ig due to the different accessory shoe position, nor on the IIIg because the distance between the accessory shoe and shutter release is too great.
Other versions are known for the Leica Standard, M series, and CL, though all are extremely difficult to find.
A true rarity.
Shows signs of use such as light scuffing throughout, but there are no areas where the brass base metal is showing through.
Tested and confirmed to mount and operate properly on several Barnack Leicas at our shop. It allows smooth and comfortable shutter release operation with the left hand. A fun accessory to use!
