Summicron-R 50mm f/2, commonly known as the tapered Summicron. Leitz product code 11228. Serial number in the 2,070,000 range, manufactured in 1965. This is an early red-letter version. It was originally a 1-cam lens and is believed to have been upgraded to 3-cam by Leitz at a later date.
The optical design consists of 6 elements in 4 groups, in a modified Gauss-type configuration. It has an excellent reputation for its refined, natural rendering, making it a highly versatile standard lens for the Leica R system. At full aperture, it retains a gentle softness, while stopping down delivers crisp, sharp results.
The minimum focusing distance is 50cm. Although it is a standard lens, it also performs well at close distances, making it useful for a wide range of subjects, from everyday snapshots and tabletop photography to portraits.
There is some paint loss on the front edge of the lens and on the sharper edges of various parts, but there are no noticeable scratches or dents. The included hood is also free from distortion and remains in good condition.
A full overhaul was carried out in June 2026. Thanks to the thorough servicing, both the aperture ring clicks and the helicoid feel smooth, allowing you to fully enjoy the shooting experience.
The lens has one faint trace of fungus at the center of the front element, as well as some coating deterioration around the edge of the front element, but these should have no effect on actual image quality.
Our test shots produced good results. We would be pleased if you would take a look at the sample images in our gallery.
The lens comes complete with a 12564 hood, 14160 Series 6 filter adapter, and Waltz UVa filter, so you can start shooting right away.
