irst-generation Noctilux 50mm f1.2, early version, made in 1968. Leitz product code 11820. Serial number in the 2.25 million range.
Released in 1966, this was the first Leitz lens to incorporate an aspherical glass element. Featuring a 4-group, 6-element construction, the Noctilux — named after the light of the night — was designed to capture images under extremely low light conditions with outstanding contrast rendition. Its distinctive vignetting and unique out-of-focus rendering create a world unlike any other. Even among the highly individualistic Leitz lens lineup, this is a truly singular and extraordinary lens.
Previously sold by our shop and carefully used by its owner, this lens has now returned to us once again. This marks the third time we have offered it for sale. Just as when we sold it previously, both the exterior and glass remain in remarkably good condition, and its rendering is simply outstanding.
There are some signs of use around the edges of the focusing helicoid ring and other high points, but overall the lens still presents a very clean appearance. The included 12503 hood shows a few small scratches and minor dings.
All functions operate properly. The aperture and helicoid retain the same excellent feel they had at the time of the previous sale. The glass is beautifully clear, free from noticeable cleaning marks or haze, with a crisp and transparent look.
Rangefinder coupling is absolutely spot-on. Needless to say, the test shooting results were superb.
The included 12503 hood, front and rear caps, and Series VIII filter are all genuine originals. With its excellent glass condition and highly accurate focus, this is a truly outstanding example.
