The second-generation black chrome version of the Summilux 50mm f1.4. Leitz product code 11114. Serial number in the 2.56 million range, manufactured in 1973.
The Summilux 2nd was introduced in 1961 with a completely redesigned appearance, departing from the chrome-bodied first-generation model often nicknamed the Lady. This second-generation black chrome version entered production in 1966. The knurled focusing ring design was also revised, and the lens became slightly lighter. This example weighs 283g in actual measurement. The optical construction remained unchanged at 5 elements in 7 groups.
Compared to the first generation, this second-generation Summilux delivers a noticeably sharper rendering at or near full aperture, while still retaining the signature Summilux character. It is highly regarded for its more stable and balanced image quality. The character of the bokeh changes depending on focusing distance, making it a lens that never grows tiresome. Whether mounted on an M-series Leica or adapted to a digital mirrorless camera, the beautiful view through the finder is simply mesmerizing. A true masterpiece that excels in all-around use.
This lens was previously sold by our shop, carefully treasured by its owner, and has now returned to us once again. This marks the third time we have offered it for sale.
Just as when we previously sold it, the lens remains in overall excellent condition. There is only the slightest paint loss at the front rim from hood attachment and removal, while elsewhere the barrel remains beautifully clean, free from noticeable scuffs, scratches, or dents.
Fully overhauled in 2025. Thanks to meticulous servicing, the aperture ring still retains a pleasantly smooth click feel, and the helicoid operates with smooth, stress-free movement. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focusing is excellent.
The glass shows a faint cleaning mark on an inner element, along with some coating deterioration around the periphery, though neither should have any effect on actual image quality.
