The Noctilux-M 50mm f1.0, one of Leica’s celebrated ultra-fast, large-aperture lenses. The Leitz product code is 11821.
Following the original Noctilux f1.2 and the f1 E58, this is the later separate-hood version among the third-generation E60 Noctilux lenses. It is admittedly a rather complicated classification, but calling it the late E60 version with separate hood should get the point across among those in the know, haha.
The serial number is in the 3,490,000 range, dating this lens to 1989. It was manufactured by Leitz Canada. The compatible hood is the 12544. Unlike the previous E58 model and the earlier E60 version, which uses the 12539 hood and mounts by twisting into place, this hood attaches with side tabs, similar to the IROOA and other classic Leitz hoods.
The rendering produced by its spherical 7 elements in 6 groups design, with no aspherical elements, is truly the Nocti world. Around wide open at f1.0, it creates ethereal highlight flare as if veiled in a thin mist, together with deep, immersive bokeh that seems to draw the viewer in. This is a unique world of expression that only this lens can create.
There are very faint signs of wear on the hood mounting area at the front of the outer barrel, and on the edges around the f4 and f5.6 markings on the aperture ring. Otherwise, this lens is in exceptional to near mint condition, retaining plenty of the fresh atmosphere it had when new.
Fully overhauled in June 2026, including focus adjustment. Both the aperture ring and helicoid now operate very smoothly.
Many examples of the separate-hood E60 Noctilux suffer from questionable rangefinder coupling accuracy, but thanks to careful servicing, this one is spot-on. You can enjoy shooting with confidence from wide open!
The glass is in beautiful condition, with no cleaning marks or haze. There is a very slight coating deterioration on an inner element, only visible when held against strong LED light, but it should have virtually no effect on actual images. This is a superb lens that lets you fully enjoy the distinctive Noctilux rendering. Our test shots also showed excellent results.
The 12544 hood, 13381 E60 UVa filter, and original front and rear caps are included.
