Nikkor S.C 5cm f1.4. Nippon Kogaku Tokyo. A rangefinder-coupled standard lens in Leica L mount.
It was introduced in October 1950, the year following the debut of its predecessor, the Nikkor-SC 50mm f1.5. While it follows the Sonnar-type design of 3 groups and 7 elements, the f1.5 was a direct copy of the Zeiss Sonnar, whereas this f1.4 incorporates Nikon’s own improvements and refinements. It features a light blue coating. Its character is defined by a soft, slightly dreamy rendering at or near wide open.
The distance scale is in feet. Filter size is 43mm. The rangefinder is coupled down to 1 meter; beyond that it becomes uncoupled, but focusing is possible down to 50cm. This feature may not have been particularly useful at the time, but in today’s mirrorless era it proves to be a valuable advantage.
This example is an early piece bearing the special batch number 5005 in the serial. It is said that the number was assigned based on the design being finalized in May 1950, hence 50 (year) 05 (month). Approximately 2,000 units with this 5005 marking were produced, existing in both Nikon S mount and Leica screw mount versions.
Previously sold by our shop, this item has returned to us after being carefully used by its owner. It remains in the same excellent condition as when it was last sold, with minimal signs of use and a beautifully clean appearance.
It was fully overhauled in November 2022, and thanks to meticulous servicing, all operations remain smooth and precise. Rangefinder coupling is spot on.
The glass is also remarkably clear, allowing you to fully enjoy its original rendering performance.
It comes complete with the rare early aluminum case and original box, making it an excellent addition to any collection. The box does show considerable signs of use.
Also included is an original period-correct two-piece lens hood, compatible with both L-mount and S-mount. The hood shows some signs of use, but it accepts Series VII filters sandwiched between its sections.
