The Leica IIIg, the final model in the Barnack Leica series. Leitz product code GOOEF. Serial number in the 880,000 range, manufactured in 1957.
The Leica IIIg was introduced in 1957, and this particular example was produced in its first year. Although located in a different position, the serial number engraved inside the IIIg body matches the number on the top plate, just as on early Leica M3 bodies.
The IIIg appeared in 1957, three years after the debut of the Leica M3 in 1954. Befitting a product from the golden age of Leitz, it was designed and manufactured without compromise, and its exceptional quality is enough to admire simply by looking at it.
It also incorporates technology developed for the legendary M3, including automatically parallax-corrected bright-line frames for 50mm and 90mm lenses. The finder offers a superb view, making the IIIg undoubtedly the most user-friendly of all Barnack Leicas.
This example retains much of the fresh appearance it had when new. The only points worth noting are a small ding on the front edge of the top cover near the winding knob, and a fair amount of scuffing around the tripod socket on the baseplate. Even taking these into account, this is still a very clean Leica IIIg.
Fully overhauled in June 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, all functions are now operating smoothly. The viewfinder showed some haze before the overhaul, but it was thoroughly refreshed during the service and is now clear and bright. The rangefinder also retains strong contrast.
