Elmar 50mm f2.8 in Leica screw mount. E39 filter size. This is an early version of the so-called Nippachi Elmar, with the distance scale marked in meters only. Leitz product code ELMOO, later code 11512. Serial number in the 1,630,000 range, manufactured in 1958.

The newly redesigned Elmar 50mm adopted new optical glass, making it one stop faster at f2.8.

Compared with the f3.5 Elmar, the number of aperture blades was increased, and more elaborate anti-reflection treatment was applied inside the barrel from the rear element to the mount surface.

Near wide open, it offers a soft and gentle rendering. It would look absolutely superb mounted on a Leica IIIf or IIIg. Compatible hoods include ITOOY, IROOA, ITDOO, 12585, and others.

There are light signs of use on the front edge of the barrel, aperture ring, and collapsible section. Otherwise, there are no notable scratches or dents, and the overall exterior condition is relatively good.

Fully overhauled in June 2026. The aperture, helicoid, and collapsible barrel lock now all operate smoothly. Rangefinder coupling is spot-on.

The glass shows only very minor coating deterioration, but there is no haze, which is often seen on this lens, and the optics are beautifully clear and bright. The coating remains on all surfaces. This example should let you fully enjoy the original rendering of the Elmar 50mm f2.8.

Genuine front cap is included. The cap itself shows a bit of use.
