Summicron 35mm f2 with a chrome finish, the so-called 8-element version. Leitz product code SAWOM, later 11308. This example is made in Germany, with a serial number in the 2.27 million range. Produced in 1968, the final year of the 8-element Summicron, before transitioning to the 6-element black-finished version in 1969. This was also the period when production of the Leica M2 came to an end, giving way fully to the M4. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m. Filter size is E39. The coating shows predominantly purple tones with hints of orange. Weight is 180g.
The 8-element Summicron, born in Leitz’s golden era, is admired not only for its superb rendering but also for its beautifully functional, distinctly German industrial design. Wide open, it delivers a soft and gentle image; stop down slightly and the sense of depth increases noticeably; stop down further and it becomes crisp while retaining a pleasing softness. Truly a Leica style, a Leica rendering. A timeless masterpiece that continues to be highly regarded. The standard.
Compatible genuine hoods include ITDOO and IROOA. Later hoods such as 12585 and 12504 can also be used.
Previously sold by our shop. This piece was carefully used by its owner and has now returned to us. Although eight years have passed since the last time we sold it, it remains in consistently fine condition.
There are minor signs of wear on the filter rim from attaching and removing a hood, but no noticeable scratches, and the overall appearance remains very clean.
A full overhaul was carried out in 2018. Despite the time that has passed, thanks to careful servicing and moderate use, the aperture and helicoid still operate with smooth, pleasing resistance, and there is no oil on the blades. The infinity lock slips smoothly into place, and rangefinder coupling is spot-on.
The glass is clear and clean, free from noticeable haze or cleaning marks, with excellent transparency. The coating remains fully intact.
A genuine front cap, UVa filter, and plastic case are included.
