A legendary lens, the Thambar 90mm f2.2. The Leitz product code is TOODY. Introduced in 1935. This example bears a serial number in the 370,000 range and was manufactured in 1937. Optical construction is 4 elements in 3 groups. Filter size is E48. Distance scale is in meters.
The only soft focus lens produced by Leitz, it has drawn renewed attention in recent years with Leica’s unexpected reissue. For soft focus portrait work, use the dedicated filter and the aperture scale marked in red. For normal shooting without the filter, use the white aperture scale.

There are paint losses and scuff marks throughout from regular use. The hood cap shows two small dings. It has a well-aged, characterful appearance that pairs nicely with a well-used black paint body.
Fully overhauled in 2024, including focus adjustment. The aperture and helicoid remain smooth and well-damped. Thanks to precise calibration, the rangefinder coupling is spot-on.
The front element shows some burn marks, and there are a number of very light cleaning marks on both the front and rear elements. However, there is no haze, and the central area remains clear and crisp.
Test shooting results are excellent, and sample images are available in our photo gallery. All shots were taken wide open using the rangefinder. Focus snaps in decisively, making it a joy to shoot. You can fully enjoy the dreamy rendering unique to the Thambar.
Includes the essential original Thambar accessories: filter, hood, and hood cap. The front cap is a rare aluminum type, and the rear cap is made of bakelite.
