Summilux 35mm f1.4 2nd version, the earliest model commonly known as the stopper version. The Leitz catalog number is 11870. Serial number in the 2.29 million range. Made in Canada in 1968.
This example is the later stopper version with a chrome stopper. The very earliest type had a black-painted brass stopper, followed later by a black-painted aluminum stopper. A little confusing, isn’t it? In other words, this is the third-generation stopper version.
The spherical Summilux 35mm is one of Leitz’s iconic fast wide-angle lenses. At full aperture it renders with a soft, beautiful glow, while stopped down it becomes crisp and sharp, letting you fully enjoy the classic Summilux character. Among these, the stopper version is especially sought after by name, but it has become much harder to find in recent years.
This example has balsam separation in the rear group of the middle elements, and is therefore offered at a special price. It has been carefully serviced, and its rendering remains very good. A perfect lens to use freely without hesitation.
The black paint on the corner of the infinity lock base shows only the slightest wear, but otherwise there are no noticeable signs of use, and the exterior is very clean.
Fully overhauled in June 2026, including focus adjustment. The aperture and helicoid have been finished with superbly smooth operation. Thanks to careful servicing, the rangefinder coupling is spot-on.
The glass shows two or three extremely faint cleaning marks on the front element, and the aforementioned light balsam separation over about one-third of the rear group, but both are only visible when held up to strong LED light. There is no haze or fungus.
Although the glass has some minor imperfections, the results from our test shooting were excellent, allowing you to fully enjoy the beautiful glow unique to the spherical Summilux. Sample photos are posted in our gallery. We hope you will take a look.
