Serial number in the 1.46 million range, manufactured in 1978. This particular example belongs to an early phase of the M4-2, following the very first red badge version. It features the somewhat contradictory dual engraving of Leitz Wetzlar and MADE IN CANADA on the top cover. This is a characteristic seen only on some early M4-2 units and makes it a rather uncommon variant.

The M4-2 was introduced in 1978 after the M5 and CL, effectively marking a return to the M4 design. Production lasted only about three years until 1980, when it was succeeded by the M4-P. No further M5-type body appeared afterward, and the M4-based design has continued through to modern digital and film Leica cameras. It suggests that many users ultimately preferred this classic form. One might compare it to the timeless frog-eye Porsche 911 or the boxy Mercedes G-Class. It is interesting how strongly people gravitate toward a completed design.

Functionally, it is based on the Leica M4, with the self-timer omitted. It retains the same brightline framelines for 35, 50, 90, and 135mm lenses. The accessory shoe is a hot shoe with built-in X-sync, and the body is designed to accommodate a motor winder.

Often overshadowed by other M models, the M4-2 has relatively low production numbers, and in recent years its appeal has been rising, particularly among those seeking a birth-year Leica.

Rare item.

There is a very slight sign of wear around the shutter release collar, but otherwise shows almost no signs of use and remains in excellent condition.

Fully overhauled in April 2026. The film advance, shutter, and all other controls operate smoothly, and the viewfinder is bright and crystal clear.

While many M4-2 bodies have seen heavy use, this example is in a particularly desirable and hard-to-find condition.
