Elmarit 28mm f2.8, popular 2nd version with infinity lock. This is an early example of the second generation Elmarit. Leica product code is 11801R.
Serial number in the 2.31 million range, manufactured in 1969. Made by Leitz Canada.
Compared to the first version, the optical design was revised to 6 elements in 8 groups, adopting a retrofocus construction. The rear element protrudes less, allowing safe use on cameras such as the M5, Leica CL, and mirrorless digital bodies. On models from the Leica M4-P onward, the 28mm framelines are available in the viewfinder.
In addition, no exposure compensation is required when used with metered bodies, making it highly practical. This lens delivers especially impressive three-dimensional rendering at the center when stopped down slightly to around f4–f5.6.
Compatible filters are E48, or Series VII filters when used together with the 12501 hood.
Previously sold by our shop, this lens has returned to us after being carefully used by its owner. It remains in beautiful condition, just as when we last sold it.
There are four very small paint losses on the front edge where the hood claws make contact, but aside from that, there are almost no signs of use such as scuffs, and the exterior is very clean.
Fully overhauled in 2026, including focus adjustment. The aperture ring has a pleasant click feel, and the helicoid is smooth and well-damped. Even the feel of the infinity stopper has been finely tuned. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focus accuracy is excellent.
There are 2–3 extremely faint cleaning marks on the front element, and slight coating wear around the periphery of the middle element, but neither will have any practical effect on image quality.
The results of our test shooting were excellent.
A lens with high contrast and resolution, while the gentle falloff and softness toward the edges create a beautiful atmosphere. This early version with stopper is a somewhat rare and popular model, often sought out specifically.
Comes with a 12501 hood and a third-party hood cap. The 12501 hood is also in very clean condition, well-matched to the lens.
