Summicron 35mm f2, second generation, commonly known as the 6-element version. This is the so-called “tabbed” version without filter threads. Leica product code 11309. Serial number in the 2.46 million range, manufactured in 1970. Made by Leitz Canada. Minimum focusing distance is 0.7m.
This is a tabbed Summicron, but despite having an E39 filter size, it lacks filter threads, making it an extremely rare variant. It is also introduced as a rare item in James Lager’s An Illustrated History Vol. II. Among the final production batches of the tabbed 6-element version, a small number of this type appears to be mixed in around serial numbers 2461xxx.
Normally, tabbed Summicron 35mm lenses have a slight misalignment between the infinity index and aperture index due to interference between the focusing tab and the focusing ring grip. However, this threadless variant uniquely has the infinity index and aperture index perfectly aligned. A very subtle detail, but an irresistible point for enthusiasts.
Often overshadowed by the 8-element version, the 6-element Summicron offers a well-balanced helicoid rotation, a focus tab that fits naturally to the fingertips, slightly subdued color rendition, and a rendering that is crisp without being overly harsh. A lens full of character and capability.
The hood is shared with the Summilux 35mm, with the 12504 hood being compatible. As this example does not have filter threads, filters are used by inserting Series VII filters into the 12504 hood.
A rare piece.
There is a very slight scuff on the front edge of the barrel at the hood mount, but otherwise it shows almost no signs of use and remains in excellent condition.
Fully overhauled in April 2026. Thanks to careful servicing, the helicoid is very smooth, and the aperture ring has a pleasant, well-defined click. Rangefinder coupling is spot on, and focusing is accurate.
There is one very faint cleaning mark on the front element, only visible under strong LED light, and it will not affect actual shooting.
Otherwise, the glass is clear with no haze, delivering a crisp and transparent view. The coating remains well preserved across all elements, and test shots confirmed excellent performance.
Comes with original front and rear caps.
