Summicron 50mm f2 (L) Radioactive

Item No. 026307

※About rarity

Collapsible Summicron 50mm f2. This example is the so-called radioactive Summicron, made with thorium glass. Confirmed with a Geiger counter. Serial number is in the 1,020,000 range, manufactured in 1952. Meter scale. The Leitz product code is SOOIC.

As is typical of thorium Summicron lenses, the glass has clearly yellowed, which should provide slightly stronger contrast when shooting in monochrome. Comparing its rendering with later Summicron lenses made with normal glass would certainly be an intriguing experiment for the curious photographer.

There are some light signs of wear, but overall the exterior is clean with minimal signs of use.

Fully overhauled in May 2026, including focus adjustment. Thanks to careful servicing, all controls now operate very smoothly. The locking mechanism for the collapsible barrel has just the right amount of torque, making operation stress-free. Rangefinder coupling is also spot-on.

The glass shows a slight amount of coating deterioration on an inner element, but it should have virtually no effect on actual images. Enjoy the sharp, crisp rendering unique to the radioactive Summicron.

Original front and rear caps are included.
